Flamed Finish

Flamed finish granite, also called thermal finish, is produced by passing an intense open flame over the wet stone surface, heating it past 1,000°C. The different minerals in granite expand at different rates under that heat, so the surface crystals fracture and pop off, leaving a coarse, non-reflective texture. On the grey granites we supply, this fracturing brings out the stone's natural fleck and grain more distinctly than a flat polished surface does, while also lightening and muting the overall tone. The process only works on granite and a handful of other stones with mixed mineral composition — uniform stones like marble and limestone can't be flamed the same way.
