A tool fitted with a grid of small pyramid-shaped points — worked by hand or driven by a pneumatic or electric hammer cycling thousands of impacts a minute — strikes the surface repeatedly, leaving a field of shallow, evenly spaced craters. Granite takes this finish especially well: its tightly interlocked quartz and feldspar crystals hold sharp, well-defined pitting that stays crisp for years, unlike softer stones such as marble or limestone, which round off and can flake under the same tool.
